NEW OFFER - 2019

Sorry, no shipping out of Europe

Dear friends and garden lovers!

The New Year and new gardening season are approaching with the return of the sun, when each following day becomes longer and brighter. At the same time I myself become more and more advanced in years – I am not as strong as before, therefore I am forced to reduce the scale of my activities to be able to manage everything in due time and in the usual quality, for which my nursery is so famous.

Last summer I repotted almost all my pot-grown plants (only reticulata irises were left intact) and in total it was 9000 pots. An incredible amount! I began in May and finished in October. Looking back I cannot understand how it was possible to offer my customers every year at least 600 items, sometimes even 700. When I was drawing up this current list, at first attempt it again reached 600, but I had made myself a strict rule – no more than 400 items, and then I was confronted with the very difficult task of the shortening of the list. What to leave or not to leave – that was the question.

The total number of grown samples still exceeds 6000, so you can imagine how many more there still are to choose from.If you have any particular wishes, let me know, and, if possible and I have time and energy, I will try to send your special dream plants. It is not that easy with colour forms though. Most of the plants grown by me are from seed, so they split in colour and not always I have time to mark the exceptionally beautiful ones. The entire spring I walk through my collection with a bunch of brushes in my pocket and do almost nothing but pollinate. Of course, occasionally some hybrids occur, because I cannot isolate all the flowers, but such is the fate of all small nurseries that offer only self-grown plants. We never offer plants from the wild – this is our principal rule.

My crocus monograph “The World of Crocuses” is almost sold out. From the 2000 printed copies there are less than 200 left. Now I’m thinking about writing and issuing “The First Supplement” because recently many researches and new species have been published, some by me as well. Last year the book received the medal of honour for excellency in biology from the Latvian Academy of Sciences. This award is given only once in 3-5 years. This is the best appreciation of my 60-year long work with bulbs, which I started as a schoolboy at only 12.

Botanical researches, too, require much time. Last year I published several new species and many still wait their turn. It is a very laborious and time-consuming task: studying the literature and descrying all the minor details for as complete a characterisation of the new things as possible, but the most painful is the preparation of the herbarium, because it means killing the plant in the herbarium press…

My nursery is registered as a small nursery, so I have a very limited allowed total income from my sells to keep this status. So I will stop the acceptance of new orders when the total amount of sells approaches this limit. Last year that moment arrived already in April, so don’t delay the ordering until the last minute. I start the despatching of bulbs in June and it is normal that now by the end of July all the orders have been sent out. The new offer will be open around Christmas – earlier than usually. It will be my Christmas present to all of you!

Sincerely Yours

Jānis Rukšāns, Dr. biol. h.c.

Now our catalogue is divided into 3 parts: The first part is the traditional offer, in which crocuses dominate, while some genera are not offered at all. The second part I named “LAST MINUTE OFFERS” – it could be published much later.

And the third part is Līga’s peonies – see her Terms of Business, which are different from mine. Līga still not decided - will she export peonies abroad or will work only for inland business. If decision will be positive - offer will appear later, when will be known results of winter.
