This year my new list appears later than usual. Some significant changes have taken place in our nursery and I was extremely busy with the preparation of my Crocus book for printing.
Unfortunately, my hopes to transfer the entire bulb business into the hands of my daughter Līga did not come true – seems like it was some kind of a wishful thinking. She has two little daughters and a family and cannot work in the nursery 10-12 hours a day without holidays as I used to do, only taking breaks when my wife Guna called me in for lunch, dinner… Still it is a great difference between the possibilities of a man and a woman. I am always in awe of my wife – how she is able to cope with all the household chores, to keep the garden in the best state and to run her perennial nursery.
So we made a difficult decision last summer – Līga helped me to harvest and replant the bulbs, but in the future she will work only with Peonies what is her great passion in the plant world. Consequently the bulbs are again in my hands…
Last September I quietly, together with my wife, children and a few close friends, celebrated my 70th birthday. This is a solid age from which more than 50 years I had devoted to bulb growing. My collections well exceed 5000 different samples. Now I am fully aware that such an amount is not to be combined anymore with my years and working capacity and so I need to curb my activities. I am compelled to discontinue the growing of some plants, so I decided to start with fritillaries this year, and next year I will shorten the bulbous irises, and then gradually will follow other genera until only my main love – crocuses – remains.
Because of these decisions, now our catalogue is divided into 3 parts: The first part is the traditional offer, in which crocuses dominate, while some genera are not offered at all. The second part I named “LAST MINUTE OFFERS” – it will be published in April or May and there will be included all the pot-grown Fritillaries. It will be ready when I see the results after this winter. I will count the bulbs in each pot and 2 options will be proposed – 1) price per bulb and 2) price of a stock from a pot with a good discount. So it will be possible to buy one bulb or all the bulbs from a pot; and it’s first come, first served. And the third part is Līga’s peonies – see her Terms of Business, which are different from mine.
PLEASE RECHECK THE TERMS OF BUSINESS! THERE ARE SEVERAL CHANGES, AS WELL AS MY AND LĪGA’S BUSINESS ADDRESSES AND BANK ACCOUNTS ARE NOT THE SAME!
